Sergeant Mbulelo David Ngubane, a 39-year-old medic, was in a well-marked ambulance when he was shot and killed by M23 rebels in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The South African Defence Force (SANDF) on Thursday released Ngubane’s name and provided details of the ambush in which he died.
“This unfortunate incident occurred even though the Geneva Convention on the Law of Armed Conflict (LOAC) clearly stipulates categories of protected persons and objects like medical personnel, medical transport in particular, and other establishment of this nature during an armed conflict,” said the SANDF in a statement.
