Liberation can’t be imposed on people by force or fear, but is unlocked by a free choice that each citizen makes in their heart, Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame told an event which marked 30 years since his country’s liberation.
Belgium granted formal political independence to Rwanda in July 1962, at exactly the same time that Burundi attained independence from Belgium.
Rwanda also marks July for the 1994 march of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) on Kigali, to end the genocide in which more than 800 000, mostly Tutsi, were killed by Hutu extremists in a span of 100 days.
