A banner of Russian President Vladimir Putin is seen during a protest to support Burkina Faso President Captain Ibrahim Traore in Ouagadougou on 20 January 2023.
- Russia, Turkey, South Korea and Iran are all allegedly supplying arms to Burkina Faso.
- Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formed a military alliance to fight violent extremism.
- Burkina Faso’s coup leader says the East African Community (Ecowas) is “finished”.
Burkina Faso’s coup leader, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, 34, said his country had to rely on Russia, Iran, Turkey, South Korea and China because the United States, France and their allies refused to sell lethal weapons to them – and went as far as blocking the delivery of weapons bought elsewhere.
In an interview with journalist Sy Marcus Herve Traore on Tuesday, Captain Traoré, a former United Nations peacekeeper in Mali, said Russia, in particular, would give his country whatever it needed.
“With Russia, there’s no equipment that we would want to pay for with them that they don’t sell. Others place restrictions on us. There are many other countries – China, Turkey, South Korea and so on – that have no restrictions.
“With Iran, whatever we want, they take stock; if we can pay, we pay,” he said.
He added that, in the West, there were countries that told them straight up “they cannot sell us something lethal”.
He argued that Burkina Faso needed the weapons to fight Jama’a Nusrat ul-Islam wa al-Muslimin terrorists, Ansaroul Islam and ISIS.
The Global Terrorism Index ranked Burkina Faso as being the fourth-most affected by terrorism in 2021 – after Afghanistan, Iraq and Somalia.
However, Captain Traoré said the West wanted his army to fight armed terrorists by “picking up stones”.
He said things were so bad for his army that, at times, they had to borrow arms from neighbouring countries.
“There have been times, during certain operations, where we would borrow weapons from neighbouring countries, come and do the operation, clean the weapons and return them.
Today, if there’s an attack, we will tell the Intervention Battalion (Alliance of Sahel States), that we must move because they are ready to fight.
In November last year, Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger formed the Alliance of Sahel States, amid coup-related sanctions and strained relations with neighbours.
Last week, the same countries announced that they had left the East African Community (Ecowas).
But, in the most recent Ecowas statement, the regional bloc said it had not received formal communication from the three countries regarding their withdrawal.
But, for Captain Traoré, Ecowas “is finished”.
