At least 61 people, including women and children, died in a shipwreck off the coast of Libya as a boat carrying around 86 refugees and migrants attempted to cross over to Europe.
At least 61 refugees and migrants, including women and children, have drowned following a “tragic” shipwreck off Libya, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has said.
The organisation’s Libya office early on Sunday quoted survivors as saying the boat was carrying around 86 people.
A “large number of migrants” are believed to have died because of high waves which swamped their vessel after it left from Zuwara, on Libya’s northwest coast, the IOM’s Libya office said in a statement.
