An official statement from the Uganda Police service on the fatal head-on collision involving a Modern Coast and Volcano bus has heaped blame on the latter driver.

According to the report by the territorial traffic police in Ntungamo, the incident which claimed six lives occurred at about 3.55am near Satellite Hotel due to recklessness.
Both bus drivers died on the spot
The accident involved a Hyundai bus belonging to Rwanda’s Volcano Bus Company and a Scania owned by Modern Coast’s Fly MCEL Oxygen.
Details indicate that Murara Alphonse, a Rwandan driver of volcano bus, and Omido David, the Kenyan driver of the Oxygen bus, both died on spot.

“The others include among them Ishingiro Mustafa, a Rwandan; the conductor of Oxygen bus identified as Gakulu Cloude; a Rwandan and the conductor in Volcano bus,” reads the report.
An approximate number of 40 passengers whose particulars are yet to be established were rushed to Lotom Health Centre in Muhanga for medical check-up.
Suspected recklessness
According to the police statement, the suspected cause of the accident has been attributed to reckless driving by the driver of the Volcano bus.
According to eyewitnesses, the driver who was from Kampala left his side and was driving from the right where he met an on-coming Oxygen bus from Kabale side.
“The driver tried to swerve to his extreme left in order to dodge the Volcano bus in vain, thus the head-on collision,” the police say.
The bodies of the deceased were transferred to the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
